History of Mueblerías Berríos

In a small 720 square foot facility in the town of Cidra began more than 45 years ago one of the greatest commercial success stories in Puerto Rico. A simple, humble, sincere man with great faith in God, he started a small furniture business in 1974, precisely in the "year of bankruptcies". Florencio Berríos, Floro, as everyone affectionately calls him, opened his first furniture store with the disinterested help, without pay of his brother Gabriel. After two years of hard work they were joined by another brother, Roberto, a master of industrial arts who was going to help them in their free time.

The year 1976 was a very significant year for this exemplary family. Floro, a man of great vision, realizes the growth potential of the young company and decides to create a company and give participation to his brothers in the business. He then decided to expand the services of Mueblerías Berríos to the town of Comerío. Floro gives participation to another of his brothers, Ruben.

That same year, faced with the extraordinary progress of society, the four brothers agreed to join what is now Empresas Berríos, one of the most solid and fastest developing companies in the industry. During that year they also established two branches in the town of Naranjito, one in the Cedro Abajo neighborhood and the other in the center of the town.

In its trajectory of rapid growth they opened two furniture stores in the town of Caguas in 1979, the following year they established in Cayey and Aibonito. In 1981 Corozal had another Berríos furniture store and in 1982 it was the turn of the town of Barranquitas. Three years later, two other branches were founded, this time under the concept of super furniture, in Humacao and Bayamón.

Due to this high rate of growth and with a view to the future, the warehouse facilities and central offices are moved to the road from Caguas to Río Piedras, an area with greater access to the main transportation routes and which, due to its extension, facilitates existing and projected operations.

In 1995, being the number one furniture chain in Puerto Rico, it was purchased by an American furniture chain called Heilig Meyers. In the same year, continuing the expansion, Heilig Meyers acquired the company BWAC. With this acquisition, 11 new branches were added to Mueblerías Berríos.

Over the years Mueblerías Berríos continues to grow by leaps and bounds around the island. Due to its accelerated growth, Mueblerías Berríos is forced to expand its Distribution Center from 175,00 square feet to 400,000 square feet. It is currently the largest in Central America, with a fleet of around 100 trucks for a capacity of 1,000 daily deliveries.

For the year 2000 the Heiling Meyers decided to sell the furniture chain and Florencio Berríos, sure of the good opportunity he had decided to buy the company again. On this occasion, a new generation is born; it is his sons and businessmen, Carlos Noel Berríos, Janice Rebeca Berríos and Héctor Emilio Berríos, who are entrusted to continue with such arduous work.

Today Empresas Berríos has 28 branches throughout the island, a liquidation center, a service department with a structure of around 60,000 square feet and the largest distribution center in Central America.

In Empresas Berríos we are a purely Puerto Rican company, for that reason we know your needs. For more than 43 years we have been offering our clients seriousness, commitment, guarantee and service as you deserve.
